Magnesium Elektron to Display Lightweight Magnesium Aircraft Seat

MANCHESTER, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Magnesium Elektron, a world leader in the development, manufacture and supply of high-performance magnesium alloys, has announced plans for this year’s Aircraft Interiors Show in Hamburg, Germany, April 14-16.

Visitors to Magnesium Elektron’s stand (Hall B7, stand 7A27) will notice the gathering interest in magnesium for aircraft interiors, particularly seating. There is now a certification route for seats containing Elektron®43 magnesium alloy, and the latest revision to the SAE standard will, when published later this year, make the overall position for magnesium usage clearer. “This is great news for the aircraft interiors market, as it will enable the use of lighter-weight Elektron®43 with no detrimental impact on performance,” said Steve Montisci, Magnesium Elektron’s European Technical Sales Manager.

The main exhibit on Magnesium Elektron’s stand will be a Piuma EVO seat from Geven, the Italian aircraft seat and interiors manufacturer that is collaborating with Magnesium Elektron on a lightweight version of this already successful seat. “We took the existing Geven seat and designed part of the primary structure for Elektron®43,” Montisci commented. “This has resulted in a 20 percent reduction in component weight.” Both companies are continuing their evaluations, as well as optimizing parts for manufacture with other partners in the supply chain.
